In a moment I'll invite you to take a breath.
When you exhale try to do it as slowly as you possibly can….
whilst imagining that you’re time-travelling back 400million years.
Go.
Breath in.
Hold for 3 seconds
and slowly exhale.... imagining yourself travelling back through time...
... Before your grandparents...
... Before Christianity and Buddhism...
... Before humans...
... and flowering plants and birds...
... Before mammals, and dinosaurs, and reptiles...
To a time even before trees.
... Imagine our earth 400 million years ago ...
an early mossy world.
“Mosses were the first plants to inhabit the land, and paved the way for creatures to follow.
Many scientists believe that the early stages of insect evolution took place in the mats of moss.”
- Robin Wall Kimmerer
Carpets of mosses grew on shores close to land.
Over hundreds, thousands and millions of years spread further onto land: a womb for insect life and a home for rooted plants, orchids in the rainforest and ferns taking hold on a mossy rock.
...
Life on earth simply wouldn't be the same without moss.
Let's give thanks to our Moss Mother.
